The beautiful American lotus or Nelumbo lutea is blooming now in the pond at The Judge Morris Estate which is part of White Clay Creek State Park near Newark DE.
The plant is native to southeast United States and is thought to have spread up the east coast carried by Native Americans who used the seeds and roots and shoots as food.
The plant is considered potentially invasive in some parts of the country as it spreads quickly by seed and rhizome.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has more information about this plant considered mystically powerful and sacred by Native Americans.
